Skagerak is a family-owned company established in 1976 in Denmark. Our primary focus has always been on producing quality furniture, designed to last for generations. As a Danish business, we are deeply rooted in Scandinavian heritage and craftmanship balancing the contrasts between classical virtues and modern daily life.
We believe in sustainable and straightforward beauty and work with skilled international designers that help us achieve that goal. Sustainability runs deep in our veins – in materials, production and the way we treat partners and employees, which is why we have been proud members of the UN Global Compact Act since 2010, B Corp since 2017 and FSCTM-certified since 2003.
The name Skagerak refers to our northern location and to the strait ‘Skagerrak’ that connects Denmark to its Nordic neighbours – a strait that has been crucial in developing the region. Skagerak is an international brand that creates a functional and long-lasting design, and one of our most significant ambitions is to take responsibility and stay curious.
Design for generations
For more than 40 years we have been crafting a long-lasting design with a modern Nordic touch. Our collection consists of indoor and outdoor furniture, accessories and lighting and contains both classic pieces that have been with us for decades and new ones that have yet to write history.
We take pride in building long-standing and honest relations with our designers and suppliers that share our vision: To create products crafted in high-quality materials and pure aesthetics that is produced responsibly for people and the planet.

We endorse transparency when it comes to production and sourcing of materials in the design industry, and we encourage everyone to start thinking more about where their products are made, what they are made of and not least under what circumstances. That’s why we’ve taken the first step towards a more transparent supply-chain with the creation of this interactive world-map, highlighting all the countries we are producing in, and what materials they mainly process there.
B Corp FOR the world
In 2017 we joined the B Corp movement – looking for new ways to use our business as a force of good. B-corps are certified ‘benefit corporations’ meeting the highest standards for social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency.
For us to join B Corp, the goal is not to compete to be the best in the world – but to help each other becoming the best FOR the world. As a globally operating company, we have a great responsibility for today’s development – for good and for worse. That’s why we strive to keep the utmost quality in three aspects: design, production and our relation to people and the planet. We don’t think of sustainability and profit as contradictions. To us, these two concepts are each other’s most important prerequisites. And therefore, we embrace the idea of a triple bottom line, measuring our success not just on economic performance but also in relation to people and the planet.
Today, there is a growing community of more than 4.000 companies from 74 countries and 150 industries working together towards 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.

The quality of design should not only be measured by the quality of materials, looks and functions – true quality is only achieved if it’s made under responsible conditions; not harming people or the planet. One important tool when trying to ensure a responsible production of all of our designs is our Code of Conduct (CoC).
The CoC is an agreement between us and our suppliers and it contains a multitude of requirements which they, their employees and sub-suppliers are expected to meet. In 2017, we joined Amfori’s Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) – a common CoC shared amongst more than 2.000 European businesses. This gives us an even stronger and more consistent voice in ensuring proper labour rights and environment policies.
BSCI’s Code of Conduct is founded on internationally-recognised standards and principles such as the UNGP, OECD and the UN Global Compact – a principle-based initiative and framework for responsible business. Having been a member of UN Global Compact Denmark since 2010, we’ve pledged to take part in working for a more sustainable future.
Through UN Global Compact and BSCI’s Code of Conduct, we are engaged in activities related to Human Rights, Labour, Environment and Anti-corruption. You can read more about these activities, goals and results in our recent UN Global Compact Communication on Progress (COP) report.

Sustainable wood sourcing
One important step towards a more sustainable design industry is to support responsible wood sourcing and forest management. That is why we endorse the Forest Stewardship CouncilTM by increasing the total share of FSCTM-certified wood in our production. Doing so, we help making sure that no more trees are felled than the forest can reproduce – and that local communities, biodiversity and forest workers are treated with respect. Since the FSCTM certification is covering some areas of the world more thoroughly than others, we also take in PEFCTM-certified wood from Canada and the like. The share of FSCTM-certified wood in our total production is currently 90% and we are working towards ensuring a 100% coverage by the end of 2025. We got our first FSC-certificate in 2003 and are proud members of FSC Denmark today as well.
The oak we use in production is from Europe. European forrests were some of the first to become FSC certified (FSCTM - C004462), which resulted in most of our indoor products becoming certified back in 2003, since then we have been working on getting our teak production certified.
Our teak is mainly from Central America and Indonesia, where they use a different certification. Using FSC certified wood is not a box-ticking exercise. We had to wait to get the right quality of teak and we also helped suppliers achieve certification. In this way we tried to bring about change for the greater good not just to meet metrics. Luckily more and more forrests are getting FSC certified due to popular demand.
Furthermore, we adhere to EU’s Timber Regulation from 2013. This means that the we perform due diligences on all shipments covered by the EUTR, to ensure that the wood comes from legal sources.
