Patinated or oiled?

We use teak for most of our outdoor furniture, as it requires little care and maintenance. Teak is a heavy, hard, and sturdy type of wood. The high content of natural oils makes it highly weather and rot resistant and is, therefore, a good choice for outdoor furniture. We use only core teak because it is richer in natural oils making it evenly grained, more weather resistant and longer lasting than the outer teak wood.

A beautiful patina

When teak is untreated, the surface will patinate over time and eventually turn into a beautiful silvery grey colour. We recommend leaving the furniture untreated as this does not affect the durability or quality of your furniture. If you wish to preserve or intensify the original honey-golden colour, use a suitable furniture oil on a regular basis. No matter what you choose, the wood will be resistant to everyday wind and weather thanks to the high content of natural oils in teak.

Whether you decide to leave the teak untreated or to give it an oil treatment, it is important to prolong the furniture's lifespan by cleaning it at least once a year, this will remove algae and dirt and make your furniture more resistant in all weathers, all year round.

Guide to applying an oil treatment

If you wish to preserve or intensify the original golden-brown colour, use Skagerak’s natural oil on a regular basis. As the natural oil saturates and darkens the surface a little, it brings out the natural beauty of the wood and leaves it well-nourished, resistant to water, dirt and grease.
