Responsible Wood Sourcing
One important step towards a more sustainable design industry is to support responsible wood sourcing and forest management. We do this by using FSC-certified wood in our production.
WE LOVE WOOD
Since Skagerak was founded in 1976, wood has always been a major part of our DNA. We love the look, feel and smell of wood and know that by using it to make our furniture we can ensure quality and longevity.
Wood is a natural, longlasting and renewable material. Wooden furniture holds onto CO2 even after trees are felled and their timber is milled.
what is fsc
FSC stands for Forest Stewardship Council and is a global forest certification system set up in 1994 by a group of business, environmental and community leaders. There are two key components: Forest management certification ensures the forest is being managed in a way that preserves biodiversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers while sustaining economic viability. Chain of custody certification confirms that products are made with materials from well-managed forests and/or recycled sources.
We are targeting using only FSC-certified wood in our production by the end of 2025.
WHY CHOOSE FSC
FSC ensures that no more trees are felled than the forest can reproduce, and that biodiversity is respected. Forest owners are obliged to hire local workers and provide them with a proper education, equipment and salary. This empowers workers and Indigenous communities as well as improving the protection of their rights. FSC also works towards ending illegal logging and sustaining the growth of forests worldwide.
Where our wood comes from
Half of our wooden furniture production uses FSC-certified teak sourced from Indonesia, Brazil and Costa Rica. We also use oak from Southern Germany and other parts of Europe. FSC is yet to cover all parts of the world, so in the absence of FSC we use PEFC-certified wood, for instance Western red cedar from Canada. Currently 90% of the wood we use is FSC-certified and we aim to make it 100% by 2025.
What you can do as a consumer
Before you buy any wooden product search for the FSC label. It provides information about the origin of the materials and gives consumers confidence the wood is sourced responsibly. By choosing products with FSC labels you are helping to care for the world’s forests for generations to come. By supporting companies who care about responsible forest management you are encouraging others to do the same.
